Design Intent
Conceived as a palimpsest, the design works with layers of history, culture, and use. Instead of preservation as replication, the approach allows transformation—retaining essence while reinterpreting form, material, and space within a modern framework.
Development
1. Reading the Context
The project begins by understanding the cultural and spatial layers of Goa—its built fabric, local practices, and the role of Feni within everyday life.
2. Interpreting Heritage
Instead of direct replication, key elements are abstracted and reinterpreted. Traditional forms, materials, and spatial patterns are adapted into a contemporary framework.
3. Spatial Layering
The design is organized as a series of layered spaces, moving from public to private. Courtyards, semi-open zones, and transitions create a gradual experience rooted in local spatial character.
4. Material & Climate Response
Locally relevant materials and passive strategies are integrated to respond to climate. Different building components adopt distinct material treatments, ensuring durability, safety, and a coherent architectural expression.
5. Cultural Value & Revival
By recognizing the importance of Feni as a GI product, the project positions architecture as a medium for cultural revival. Activating this identity has the potential to strengthen local economy, enhance tourism, and reintroduce the craft within a contemporary setting.
Outcome
A layered architectural response that reconnects heritage with present use, creating a platform for cultural, social, and economic renewal.
